Our engineers and technology experts embrace an innovative, collaborative approach to software development that includes the participation and deep insights from the utility industry and the U.S. Department of Energy research programs. These efforts led to the development of GEM, the first utility-specific emergency management solution, as well as other technological developments related to the integration of solar power generation data and the acceleration of renewable resource grid interconnection.
As we look to the future, we will continue to invest and explore, develop and progress new solutions that support the energy transition.
GEM: Grid Emergency Management
GEM is a first-of-its-kind software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform built specifically for utilities, enabling seamless collaboration and communication during all-hazard events.
It provides a common operating picture for utility assets, weather alerts, transmission notifications and local information. Through a centralized hub, utilities can proactively store emergency playbooks to foster more effective real-time collaboration and decision making. For post-event recovery, GEM streamlines the process of compiling data and information for timely, accurate reports.

PIVA: Photovoltaic Integration via Virtual Airgap
Photovoltaic Integration via Virtual Airgap (PIVA) is a cloud-based platform for integrating behind-the-meter (BTM) assets—including distributed energy resources (DERs) that securely emulate traditional physical airgaps in protecting mission-critical systems. It decouples data collection from DERs, such as photovoltaic systems, from power utility operations technology systems, reducing exposure to cybersecurity risks by validating and securing the data. PIVA was developed with support from the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) and is being used to demonstrate how to safely connect higher penetrations of customer-owned DERs into utility critical operational systems.
AIRIS: AI Renewable Interconnection Siting
(AIRIS) is currently in development and will offer an easy-to-use online service designed to accelerate and improve the engineering analysis of the interconnection of renewable resources. It includes an AI-enabled, centralized location for technical data, security requirements and confidentiality agreements that can automate the point of interconnection (POI) selection process from beginning to end while addressing applicable regulatory compliance and cyber security requirements.
